Mary’s Thoughts on Finding Her Purpose…

My leadership journey began when I was 9 years old, as the first girl to play little league in a town outside Chicago. At age 21, I traveled to Ecuador as a volunteer with Amigos de las Américas. Since then, I have spent time in 12 Latin American countries, deepening my connection to the Latin American culture. My husband and I now spend four months every year living in Oaxaca, Mexico. I currently serve on the board of Puente a la Salud Comunitaria, an organization based in Oaxaca.

“My work has led me on paths from the rural areas of Hawaii to the cities of Macedonia and South Africa. I have worked with community-based organizations, multinational corporations, and United States Congressional members. These experiences have shaped the lens that I have on the world and the work that I do.

“The change we want to see in the world starts with how we engage adults with our young people today. Not only do young people need the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their greatness, adults need to build their confidence in young people to lead. My approach to my work incorporates both aspects of this audacious social change agenda.”
